Going Goth: What to Wear

Everyone knows about Goths and the Gothic subculture, but not everyone who knows about it really understands it. The characteristic dress code for members of the Gothic community is black. However, Goths also often dress in a different way; it is not simply a matter of the same clothing that your girl-next-door would wear just in black.

The women who prescribe to the Gothic way of life dress and accessorize themselves for the part from head to toe. You must understand that Goth clothing represents the fact that its wearers do not exist within the norm of society. Thus their clothes reflect their difference from the people around them and their similarity to others within their community.

Typically girlie Goth

Women’s Goth clothing is far from boring. In fact, it is the smaller details and accessories to the clothing that that truly sets it apart from the rest. Classic women’s gothic clothes include materials such as PVC and lace, not something you see on your average ‘plain Jane’. Their clothing often incorporates buckles and lace-up sections. These are particularly predominant on their boots. Other popular items of Goth clothing for girls and women include fishnets.

That refers to fishnet stockings, gloves and anything else that comes in fishnet. Long and short black dresses are the norm. However, the more ornate, the better as this sets her apart from anyone else simply wearing a little black number.

Trench coats are popular in Gothic fashion; the more flowing and ethereal looking, the better; naturally they have to be in black. Jewelry for a Gothic woman often consists of silver items, wide-cuff bracelets, spiked collars and bracelets and even some punk inspired jewelry items. You will also find luxurious fabrics in her wardrobe, such as velvet.

Undefined, like its members

Goth clothing is not always easy to define as it has its roots in Punk fashion and shares many qualities with Emo fashion. Aside from the predominant black color, Gothic clothing varies from one Goth to the next, essentially, as a Gothic woman, she wears clothing that she feels comfortable in and which reflects her own personal sense of style and your personality.

Much of what a Gothic woman will elect to wear is artistic and keeps her well separated from anything mainstream, unless it is mainstream Goth of course. Each Gothic woman has her own perception of what Goth clothing should be and consist of and she is the dictator of her own fashion.
